The deportees who want to 'Make El Salvador Great Again'

When I traveled to El Salvador with a visual journalist, we went in search of new angles on immigration. In the midst of a maelstrom of stories about immigrants being detained and deported in the U.S., we wondered: what happens next? This story features three Salvadorans who grew up in California and were deported as adults back to a country they barely knew.

Documenting Hate

At Univision, I was part of Documenting Hate, a ProPublica-led project reporting on hate crimes and hate incidents.

I engaged with our audience about incidents they’d experienced and investigated topics including: hate-fueled attacks at Walmart stores, how anti-immigrant sentiment affects Latinos, fear of speaking Spanish in public, the insult ‘Go back to your country,’ hate in the ER and more.

I was interviewed about the project on the Investigative Reporters and Editors podcast.

After 10 migrants died in the back of a sweltering tractor-trailer in Texas in July 2017, we asked readers to share their experiences crossing the border or traveling towards the U.S. packed into one of these trucks.
